From the Magazine: The MBA debate

There was a time when having a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree meant you’d be guaranteed a spot in the upper echelons of a company. But these days many of the world’s wealthiest people — including Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg — are university dropouts and MBAs seem to have lost their luster.

“Not only is there a backlash against schools and their products in the wake of the financial crisis but MBA qualifications are conspicuously absent among those at the very top”, Finweek reported.

Aspiring executives who’ve hit the middle management ceiling can still benefit from the degree, however.

“An MBA could be an astute salary-raising exercise”, The Sydney Morning Herald noted.

Below are the top MBA schools in South Africa and the world, according to Finweek and The Financial Times.

SOUTH AFRICA’S TOP MBA SCHOOLS — Finweek

  1. University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, Cape Town (which produces 33% of SA’s MBA graduates)
  2. Gordon Institute of Business Science, Johannesburg (30%)
  3. Wits Business School, Johannesburg (18%)
  4. Stellenbosch Business School, Cape Town (15%)

THE WORLD’S TOP MBA SCHOOLS — The Financial Times

  1. Stanford Graduate School of Business, US
  2. Harvard Business School, US
  3. University of Pennsylvania, US
  4. London Business School, UK
  5. Columbia Business School, US
