Cannes Film Festival jury denies ‘sexism’ claim British director Andrea Arnold and German actress Diane Kruger at the 65th Canne film festival

The jury for the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or has spoken out over claims of sexism prompted by the lack of female film-makers in the running.

Many critics have complained that all 22 films in the contest have been directed by men, many past winners of the award. But jury member British director Andrea Arnold said: “I would absolutely hate it if my film was selected because I was a woman. I would only want my film to be selected for the right reasons.”

What we’re reading now: Hong Kong Inventor Leads Charge in War Against Pollution

Following alarming reports of thousands of annual deaths from pollution in Hong Kong and the city’s promise to reach World Health Organization standards by 2014, air pollution and clean energy have been infectious topics in Hong Kong this year. With an air quality objective more than 25 years old, government response has arguably been slow to act, but there have been swift and ample efforts from local academics, activists and engineers to get the first-class city on track to meet first-rate air quality standards.

One Hong Kong-based inventor, Lucien Gambarota, is leading the way. Since the age of 12, the French-born Italian has been making a name for himself as a trailblazing engineer. Forty years since his first invention — an underwater breathing machine — Gambarota is living in Hong Kong with roughly 300 innovations under his belt.Sensing that energy would be an issue for future generations, Gambarota began focusing his electric zeal on conservation and renewable projects about a decade ago.

Warhol painting of Elvis to go under the hammer

An Andy Warhol portrait of Elvis Presley as a cowboy is being sold at a New York City auction. Sotheby’s says the ‘Double Elvis’ will be sold Wednesday night during a contemporary art sale.

The silver silkscreen painting shows the rock and roll heartthrob armed and shooting from the hip. A shadowy Elvis figure is faintly visible in the background. It was exhibited at the Ferus Gallery in Los  Angeles in 1963, the year it was created. The auction house said it’s the first ‘Double Elvis’ to appear on the market since 1995. The sale estimate is $30 million to $50 million.

Vogue vows to ban underweight and underage models

Published by on May 5th, 2012 12:07 PM, No Comments

In a groundbreaking move, international fashion magazine Vogue has pledged it will no longer use photographs of dangerously underweight models.

In a statement published across all of its 19 international editions on Thursday, the magazine’s editors promised not to picture models under the age of 16 or those who they believe have an eating disorder.

They said the six-point pact, called ‘The Health Initiative’, aims to encourage a healthier approach to body image within the fashion industry, which has been lambasted for promoting anorexia.

Will Oxford and Cambridge admit more poor students?

Published by on May 2nd, 2012 10:19 AM, No Comments

The legendary Oxford interview — during which a university academic invites a prospective undergrad into her study, hands him a cup of tea and ruthlessly probes the limits of his intelligence — is often cited as the scariest part of applying to the university.

But for some young hopefuls, the overflowing bookshelves and wood paneling in a typical professor’s study are just as likely to throw them as any question about Rousseau’s “social contract.” For students from the inner city, many of whom have grown up with concrete and fluorescent lights, it’s easy to be overawed.

That’s why, in one of the roughest parts of London, a public school recently built a little piece of Oxford — a replica don’s room — in the hopes of boosting students’ confidence when they go for an interview in the real thing.

Painting roofs white is as green as taking cars off the roads for 50 years, says study

Published by on Apr 29th, 2012 3:17 PM, No Comments

Painting roofs white and using light-coloured materials to surface roads and pavements would not only make cities cooler in summer, it would save the same amount of carbon as taking all the cars in the world off the roads for 50 years, a study has found.

One of the simplest, yet most effective, ways of engineering the urban environment to cope with global warming is to increase the reflectivity of the cityscape so that more of the incoming sunlight is directed back into space, scientists said.

A flash mob of ‘prostitutes’ stunned passers-by in Amsterdam’s red light district with a hard-hitting public service announcement (PSA) against human trafficking.

In a video, which has gone viral on YouTube, six ‘sex workers’ strut their stuff in the windows of brothels by the famous canals as tourists wander past.

What we’re reading now: Another night to remember

When the Costa Concordia, a floating pleasure palace carrying 4,200 people, hit a rock off the Italian coast on January 13, it became the largest passenger ship ever wrecked, supplanting the Titanic in maritime history.

From the moments when the captain made the first in a series of incredible blunders, through a harrowing night of mindless panic and deadly peril, in which rescuers and passengers improvised a massive evacuation and ordinary men emerged as heroes, Bryan Burrough reconstructs an epic fight for survival—in which all too many would perish.
